Former top cop David Coleman will visit the scene of a savage crime as part of his long distance walk.
Derbyshire’s ex-chief constable and now the county’s High Sheriff is hiking 220 miles to raise money for the Peak District Rescue Association in their 50th anniversary year.
He will also raise cash for his own fund which provides grant support to Derbyshire projects to engage young people and help divert them from crime and anti-social behaviour.
Part of his walk around the county boundaries will be over Cutthroat Bridge, on the A628 from the Ladybower Inn, where a man was allegedly killed on the road, in the early 19th century.
David, a policeman for 32 years, starts his hike tomorrow (Friday) from Codnor Park in the south of the county and expects to complete it by September 7.
He’s planning to do it in 16 day-long stages.
He is hoping local people will turn out and walk part of the way with him.
David will arrive in Hadfield via the Longdendale Trail on Sunday, August 17.
The next few days will see him walking through Hadfield, Broadbottom, Gamesley, Chisworth, New Mills, Furness Vale and Whaley Bridge.
The High Sheriff told the Chronicle: “I am born and bred in Derbyshire, and really want to put something back into the community.
“I see this walk as one way of getting people together to celebrate the greatness of Derbyshire while helping raise money for some very worthwhile causes.”
